Desztillációval is the Hungarian term for distillation, a common process in chemistry and industry. It is a method of separating components of a liquid mixture based on their different boiling points. The process involves heating the mixture to a point where one component vaporizes, then cooling the vapor to condense it back into a liquid. This condensed liquid, now enriched in the more volatile component, is collected separately.

The apparatus typically used for distillation consists of a boiling flask, a distillation head, a condenser, and a receiving flask. The boiling flask holds the initial mixture. The distillation head connects the boiling flask to the condenser and often includes a thermometer to monitor the temperature of the vapor. The condenser, usually a tube surrounded by a cooling jacket, cools the vapor, causing it to liquefy. The receiving flask collects the purified distillate.

Distillation has numerous applications. In laboratories, it's used to purify solvents, separate reaction products, and isolate compounds. Industrially, it's crucial for refining crude oil into various fuels and chemicals, producing alcoholic beverages like spirits, and purifying water. There are several types of distillation, including simple distillation, fractional distillation (used for mixtures with close boiling points), steam distillation, and vacuum distillation (used for compounds that decompose at their normal boiling points). The efficiency of distillation depends on factors such as the difference in boiling points between components and the design of the distillation apparatus.
