Desoxidizers are chemical compounds or preparations used to remove oxidation from metal surfaces. Oxidation, commonly known as rust for iron or tarnish for other metals, is a process where a metal reacts with oxygen, often in the presence of moisture, to form a metal oxide. This oxide layer can degrade the metal's appearance, structural integrity, and electrical conductivity. Desoxidizers work by chemically reacting with these metal oxides, converting them into more soluble or easily removable substances.

The specific composition of a desoxidizer varies depending on the type of metal and the severity of the oxidation. For ferrous metals like iron and steel, acidic solutions are commonly employed. These acids, such as phosphoric acid or hydrochloric acid, can dissolve the iron oxides. For non-ferrous metals like copper, brass, or silver, milder acidic or chelating agents might be used to avoid damaging the underlying metal. Some desoxidizers also contain surfactants to help wet the surface and penetrate the oxide layer, as well as inhibitors to prevent the desoxidizer from attacking the base metal itself.

Applications for desoxidizers are widespread, including in industrial cleaning, metal fabrication, restoration of antique items, and in electronics manufacturing to ensure good electrical contact. After the desoxidizer has done its work, the metal surface is typically rinsed thoroughly and often treated with a protective coating or passivation layer to prevent rapid re-oxidation. Proper handling and disposal of desoxidizers are important due to their often corrosive nature.
