Safety considerations include ventilation, skin and eye protection, and avoiding mixing with incompatible substances that can release toxic gases.

Regulatory oversight varies by region. In many jurisdictions, disinfectants must be registered and labeled with clear claims and instructions. Shelf life and storage conditions also influence performance. Desinfektante are distinct from sterilants, which aim to destroy all forms of microbial life, and from sanitizers, which reduce microbial counts to accepted public health standards.
