Dermatitis is a general term for inflammation of the skin. It can affect people of all ages and manifests in various ways. The most common symptom is itchy, red, and sometimes swollen skin. Depending on the cause and severity, blisters, oozing, or scaling may also occur.

There are numerous types of dermatitis, each with distinct causes and characteristics. Atopic dermatitis, often referred to as eczema, is a chronic condition linked to genetic factors and immune system dysfunction. Contact dermatitis develops when the skin reacts to an irritant or allergen. Irritant contact dermatitis is caused by direct damage to the skin from substances like soaps or chemicals, while allergic contact dermatitis is an immune response to an allergen like poison ivy or nickel.

Seborrheic dermatitis is a common condition that causes flaky, white to yellowish scales on oily areas such as the scalp, face, and chest. Nummular dermatitis presents as coin-shaped patches of itchy, inflamed skin. Stasis dermatitis occurs in people with poor circulation, typically in the lower legs, leading to redness, itching, and skin changes.

Diagnosis of dermatitis usually involves a physical examination and a review of the patient's medical history. In some cases, patch testing may be used to identify allergens. Treatment aims to reduce inflammation, relieve itching, and prevent further damage. This can include topical corticosteroids, moisturizers, oral medications, and avoiding triggers.
