Deposizione is a term used in Italian to denote the act of laying down or the material that has been laid down. In scientific and technical contexts it refers to the process by which matter settles out of a transporting medium or is precipitated from a solution, resulting in accumulation on a surface or in a layer. The concept spans geology, chemistry, and materials science, and it can also refer to the resulting substance, such as sediment or a coating.

In geology and sedimentology, deposition occurs when the energy of a transporting medium—water, wind, or ice—decreases, causing carried particles to settle. Over time this leads to the accumulation of sediments and the formation of stratified rocks such as sandstone, shale, and limestone. Deposition is influenced by factors including grain size, mineralogy, climate, and the chemistry of the environment. Depositional environments include rivers, beaches and dunes, lakes, deltas, seas, and deep-sea basins.

In materials science, deposition describes processes that form a coating or thin film on a surface. Common methods are chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and physical vapor deposition (PVD), which build layers with controlled thickness and composition. Other forms include electroplating and atomic layer deposition, used to improve wear resistance, corrosion protection, or to fabricate electronic and optical components.

In law, deposition denotes a witness’s sworn out-of-court testimony recorded for later use in legal proceedings. Depositions are a feature of pre-trial discovery in many jurisdictions and involve direct examination and cross-examination, with a transcript produced by a court reporter.
