Depixelation is a process that aims to restore detail to an image that has been pixelated, often as a form of compression or intentional obfuscation. Pixelation occurs when an image is displayed at a resolution lower than its original, causing individual pixels to become visible and blurring finer details. Depixelation techniques attempt to reverse this by inferring the missing information and reconstructing a sharper image.

Several approaches exist for depixelation. One common method involves using interpolation algorithms, which estimate the color of missing pixels based on the colors of their surrounding pixels. More advanced techniques leverage machine learning, particularly deep learning models trained on vast datasets of high-resolution and corresponding pixelated images. These models learn to recognize patterns and effectively "hallucinate" plausible details to fill in the gaps.

The effectiveness of depixelation varies greatly depending on the degree of pixelation, the algorithm used, and the complexity of the original image. Severe pixelation can result in irreversible loss of information, making perfect reconstruction impossible. However, for moderate levels of pixelation, depixelation can significantly improve visual clarity and make the image more interpretable.
