Dentalokklusjon refers to the way the upper and lower teeth come together when the mouth is closed or during chewing. It encompasses the relationship between the teeth, jaws, and the temporomandibular joints (TMJs). A proper occlusion is crucial for efficient chewing, clear speech, and the overall health of the oral structures. Deviations from an ideal occlusion are known as malocclusions.

Several factors contribute to dental occlusion, including the size, shape, and position of individual teeth, as well as the skeletal relationship of the upper and lower jaws. The alignment of teeth, the presence of adequate space between them, and the way the jaw muscles function all play a role. Occlusion is not static; it changes throughout a person's life, influenced by growth, tooth loss, and wear.

Malocclusion can manifest in various ways, such as crowding of teeth, gaps between teeth, an overbite (upper teeth extending too far over lower teeth), an underbite (lower teeth extending too far over upper teeth), or a crossbite (upper teeth fitting inside lower teeth). These conditions can lead to difficulties with chewing, increased risk of tooth decay and gum disease due to cleaning challenges, abnormal wear of teeth, and even jaw pain or headaches. Diagnosis and treatment of malocclusion are often managed by dentists and orthodontists, who may utilize various appliances to correct the alignment and improve function.
