Denaturanti, or denaturants, are chemical additives used to alter the structure or usability of a substance, often rendering it unsuitable for its original purpose. The term is applied in several contexts, most notably in biochemistry and in the denaturation of ethanol for industrial use.

In biochemistry and molecular biology, denaturants are reagents that unfold proteins or nucleic acids by disturbing noncovalent interactions such as hydrogen bonds, hydrophobic forces, and ionic interactions. Common examples include urea, guanidinium salts, and detergents like SDS. These agents can destabilize folded structures to study folding processes, solubility, or to facilitate analytical procedures. Some denaturation is reversible, while other cases lead to irreversible changes or aggregation.

In the context of ethanol or beverage regulation, denaturants are additives mixed with ethyl alcohol to make it unfit for human consumption. This deters drinking and helps satisfy regulatory or tax rules. Frequently used denaturants include methanol, isopropanol, acetone, toluene, as well as bittering agents or dyes. Denatured alcohol is widely employed as a solvent, cleaning agent, fuel, or industrial feedstock. Safety is a central concern, since many denaturants are highly toxic or hazardous if ingested, inhaled, or absorbed.
