The deltoideuslihasel is the scientific name for the deltoid muscle, a large triangular muscle covering the glenohumeral joint. It is composed of three distinct parts: the anterior (clavicular), the lateral (acromial), and the posterior (scapular) portions. Each part originates from a different section of the scapula and clavicle and converges to insert on the deltoid tuberosity of the humerus.

The primary function of the deltoid muscle is to abduct the arm at the shoulder joint. The anterior fibers are responsible for flexion and medial rotation of the arm, while the posterior fibers contribute to extension and lateral rotation. The lateral fibers are the main abductors. This muscle is crucial for a wide range of movements, including lifting the arm, reaching, and throwing.

The deltoid muscle is innervated by the axillary nerve, which originates from the brachial plexus. Blood supply is provided by the posterior circumflex humeral artery. It is a superficial muscle, making it easily palpable and visible. In anatomical terms, the deltoid muscle is a key player in shoulder girdle function and upper limb mobility. Injuries to the deltoid can significantly impair arm function and are often associated with shoulder dislocations or rotator cuff tears. It is also a common site for intramuscular injections due to its size and accessibility.
