delbånd

Delbånd is a term used in Danish and Norwegian technical writing that translates roughly as subband or partial band. It denotes a subdivision of a wider frequency band into narrower bands, typically created with a filter bank or other spectral decomposition method. The concept is common in signal processing, telecommunications, and broadcasting, where working with smaller frequency ranges can simplify processing, modulation, or coding.

In telecommunications and broadcasting, delbånds are used for channelization and spectrum management. By splitting a signal into multiple subbands, different processing steps, modulation schemes, or error-correction codes can be applied to each subband. This can improve efficiency, flexibility, or robustness in the overall system, and it underpins techniques such as multirate processing and subband multiplexing.

In audio and speech processing, delbånd often refers to subband coding methods. A wideband signal may be divided into several subbands using a filter bank, after which each subband is processed and encoded separately. Common implementations use a fixed number of subbands (for example 32) produced by a polyphase filter bank, enabling lower bit rates or targeted perceptual processing while preserving overall sound quality.

In digital signal processing, delbånds relate to both uniform and non-uniform filter banks, including the steps of decimation and interpolation that accompany subband division and reconstruction. Their design affects aliasing, efficiency, and reconstruction quality in the final signal.
