Degree of pertinence is a numeric measure used to express how relevant a document, item, or fact is to a given query, task, or context. In information retrieval and natural language processing, it quantifies the closeness of fit between what a user seeks and what is provided. It is often used to rank search results and guide decision support.

Operationally, the degree of pertinence is typically a similarity or scoring function. In vector space models, cosine similarity or dot product between a query vector and a document vector yields a score. In probabilistic and bag-of-words models, scores are derived from term frequencies, inverse document frequencies, and field weights, as in TF-IDF or Okapi BM25. Modern systems may compute a degree of pertinence with learning-to-rank methods, combining features and training against human judgments to predict a relevance score.

In fuzzy logic and related frameworks, degree of pertinence may be treated as a membership or truth degree in a fuzzy set, representing partial relevance: a document can be highly pertinent in one aspect but less so in another, yielding a partial degree of pertinence.

Applications include search engines, question-answering systems, recommendation engines, and decision-support tools. Limitations include subjectivity, context sensitivity, and potential biases in data or models; scores are estimates rather than objective truths and should be interpreted as relative rankings or conditional relevance.
