Definice is the act or result of giving the precise meaning of a term or concept. In philosophy, linguistics, mathematics and law, a definition clarifies scope, distinguishes the term from related ideas, and provides a basis for argument and analysis.

There are several kinds of definitions. Lexical definitions describe how a term is used in a language (as in dictionaries). Stipulative definitions propose a new or specific sense for a term. Precising definitions reduce vagueness in a context. Theoretical definitions express the term in terms used by a theory. Each type serves different purposes and contexts.

Most definitions have two parts: the definiendum (the term being defined) and the definiens (the explanation). A common mathematical form is genus plus differentia: a square is a rectangle (genus) with equal sides (differentia). Ostensive definitions point to examples or objects to convey meaning by demonstration.

Quality criteria for definitions include clarity, accuracy, usefulness, and non-circularity. A good definition should be neither too broad nor too narrow, avoid circular reference, and be verifiable. Poor definitions often rely on the defined term or are so vague that they fail to delimit the concept.

In scholarly contexts, definitions establish shared terminology and enable precise analysis. The Czech word definice is used across disciplines to mark the explanation of a term’s meaning, from dictionaries to philosophical writings. Definitions evolve as language and theory develop, reflecting changes in how concepts are understood.
