Decommissioned server, often referred to as a retired or obsolete server, is a piece of computer hardware that has reached the end of its operational life cycle within an organization. This can occur due to various reasons, including hardware failure, technological obsolescence, the need for upgrades to newer, more powerful systems, or the consolidation of IT infrastructure. When a server is decommissioned, it is removed from active service.

The process of decommissioning a server typically involves several steps. First, data stored on the server must be securely backed up and migrated to a new system or archival storage. Following data transfer, all sensitive information on the server's storage devices must be securely erased to prevent data breaches. This can involve physical destruction of hard drives or specialized software-based data wiping techniques. Once data security is ensured, the server hardware is physically disconnected from the network and power sources.

After removal from service, decommissioned servers can be handled in several ways. Some may be repurposed for less demanding tasks, testing environments, or educational purposes if they still retain some functionality. Others might be sent for recycling, where valuable components are recovered and hazardous materials are disposed of responsibly. In some cases, organizations may choose to sell functional but obsolete hardware to specialized refurbishers or secondary market vendors. The specific method chosen often depends on the server's age, condition, residual value, and the organization's environmental and data security policies.
