A decentralist is a person who advocates decentralization—distributing authority, decision-making, and resources away from a central authority toward regional, local, or autonomous units. The term is used across political, organizational, and technological contexts and denotes a preference for placing political power or operational control closer to the people affected by it.

In politics, decentralists emphasize devolving power to states, provinces, municipalities, or local councils, often guided by principles of subsidiarity and local self-government. They seek to improve responsiveness, accountability, and legitimacy by tailoring policy to diverse local conditions and by reducing the scope of centralized rule.
