Debarkers are mechanical devices designed to remove bark from logs or timbers. In industrial settings, debarking improves processing efficiency, reduces damage from bark during sawing or chipping, and minimizes contamination by dirt, fungi, or resin. Debarking can be performed at the harvest site or in a mill, depending on logistics and economics.

Operation: Most debarkers consist of a feed mechanism that moves the log past one or more blades, knives, or abrasive surfaces. As the log contacts the stripping surface or is rotated against cutting elements, bark is peeled away. Some designs use a rotating drum or cylinder with stripping blades; others use stationary knives around a cylinder or segmented rollers that apply pressure and shear. Water spray or air can be used to cool and flush debris.

Designs: Drum debarkers enclose the log in a rotating cylinder with circumferential knives; knife-ring or blade-debarkers use a ring of stationary cutters; roller debarkers employ opposing rollers with sharp edges or scraping profiles; compact harvesters may include integrated debarking heads.

Applications and benefits: In sawmills and pulp mills, debarked logs yield cleaner chips, reduced wear on saws and chippers, and less staining from bark-resin. Debarking also reduces transport weight and can decrease pest risk. It is particularly common for softwoods and hardwoods with thick bark.

Considerations: Bark type, log size and curvature, and desired surface finish influence choice of debarker. Some bark adherence remains on curved sections. Maintenance, blade wear, and safety requirements are important considerations.
