A debarker is a machine designed to remove bark from logs and other bark-bearing materials. Debarking is a common step in sawmilling, pulping, veneer production, and bioenergy supply chains. Removing bark reduces processing wear and tear, minimizes green wood impurities, and improves chip and fiber quality downstream. Bark byproducts can be recovered as mulch, fuel, or decorative products.

Most debarkers operate by applying mechanical stripping to the log surface. Logs are brought into contact with rotating drums, rollers, or barrels equipped with stripping knives, blades, or abrasive surfaces. As the log passes, the bark is peeled or cut away and conveyed away from the processing line. Some systems apply moisture, steam, or hot water to loosen the bark before mechanical removal.

Common designs include drum or barrel debarkers, ring or roller debarkers, and knife-edge debarkers. Wet or steam-assisted variants soften bark and support cleaner removal, while dry mechanical units rely on cutting and scraping. The choice of design depends on log species, diameter, moisture, and production rate.

Performance considerations include bark retention, cambial damage risk, energy use, and knife wear. Proper maintenance and regular blade sharpening are needed to prevent log damage and ensure consistent debarking. Debarking efficiency influences downstream yield and quality in sawnwood, pulp, and veneer applications.
