dBlocks is a data-structuring paradigm for distributed systems that organizes information into discrete units called dBlocks. Each block contains a header and a payload. The header includes a unique block identifier, references to one or more parent blocks, a timestamp, and a cryptographic digest of the block contents. The payload carries the data payload and optional metadata. Blocks are linked by cryptographic hashes, forming either a chain or a directed acyclic graph that records data history and lineage.

The design emphasizes content addressing, immutability, and verifiable provenance. A block is considered valid when its header and payload satisfy the defined schema, all parent references are present, and any signatures are authentic. The integrity of a block can be verified by recalculating the digest and checking references against the predecessor blocks. dBlocks typically support pluggable storage backends and multiple languages through well-defined APIs.

Workflow and operations: Ingestion of data creates new blocks, which are then validated, propagated to peers, and stored. Systems may enable parallel validation for throughput, batch or streaming ingestion, and selective replication to meet policy and privacy requirements. Queries can target provenance, lineage, and data content, leveraging the block graph to trace how a datum evolved over time.

Applications: The framework is used for data provenance and reproducible analytics, cross‑organization collaboration, supply‑chain traceability, audit trails, and distributed data lakes. By providing verifiable history and tamper-evident links, dBlocks aim to improve accountability and data quality in complex environments.

Status and governance: dBlocks are described in several open standards proposals and reference implementations. There is no single universal specification, and projects may differ in block schema, consensus rules, and storage formats.
