DBN is an acronym used in multiple disciplines, most commonly referring to two distinct concepts in machine learning and probabilistic modeling: Deep Belief Network and Dynamic Bayesian Network. Both are generative models that can handle high-dimensional data and temporal structure, but they belong to different families and historical contexts.

A Deep Belief Network (DBN) is a multi-layer generative neural network composed of stacked Restricted Boltzmann Machines, trained greedily in a layer-wise fashion. The idea, developed by Geoffrey Hinton and colleagues, uses unsupervised pretraining to initialize deep networks before supervised fine-tuning. Hidden units are typically binary, though Gaussian variants exist, and the model learns a joint distribution over observed and hidden variables. Training relies on contrastive divergence and approximations to maximum likelihood. Because it learns hierarchical representations, the DBN was influential in early deep learning and helped establish ideas later used in end-to-end architectures. In practice, DBNs have largely been superseded by direct supervised training of deep neural networks, but they contributed to methods for initializing deep models and for probabilistic generative modeling. Applications include feature extraction, dimensionality reduction, and pretraining for image or speech tasks.

A Dynamic Bayesian Network (DBN) extends a Bayesian network to temporal domains by representing variables across time slices and connecting slices with temporal edges according to a Markov assumption. It can model time-dependent processes, handle missing data, and accommodate uncertain observations. Inference tasks include filtering, smoothing, and forecasting; parameter learning can use Expectation-Maximization, and structure learning remains challenging. DBNs support discrete and continuous variables, often using discrete CPTs or linear Gaussian models. They are used in speech recognition, activity recognition, finance, and systems biology, among other fields, to capture evolving dependencies over time.
