Datemarking, also written date marking, is the practice of attaching date-related markers to objects or data to indicate when they were created, modified, validated, or are due for use or disposal. The concept covers both physical goods and digital information, with different applications and implications in each domain.

In physical goods, datemarking is most visible in date labeling on products, such as sell-by, use-by, or best-before dates. These marks communicate shelf life, help ensure food safety, and support regulatory compliance. In other industries, date marks may indicate production dates, batch numbers, or disposal timelines for regulated materials.

In the digital realm, datemarking refers to timestamping and tagging data with dates and provenance information to support traceability, governance, and data integrity. Methods include file system timestamps (creation, modification, and access times), embedded metadata in digital files (such as EXIF, IPTC, and XMP for media), and database or version-control timestamps. More formal approaches employ cryptographic time stamping and trusted timestamp authorities to prove a document’s existence at a specific moment.

Datemarking supports purposes such as audit trails, regulatory compliance, product recalls, data retention policies, and data governance. Challenges include clock synchronization and time zone handling, potential tampering of dates, privacy considerations when dates reveal sensitive information, and fragmentation of standards across industries. Careful design of dating practices and metadata schemas helps ensure reliability, interoperability, and trust.
