Datatillgänglighetslagen, also referred to as dataprivatlivsloven in some regions, is a Swedish law passed in 2018 with the intention of strengthening privacy protections for individuals online.

The law brought significant changes to how companies handle and process personal data in Sweden. Key elements of the law include enhanced requirements for data disclosure, simplified procedures for data subjects to obtain information about data processing, and strengthened penalties for non-compliance. The law also grants individuals the right to object to processing of their personal data, be informed about and correct inaccuracies in their data, as well as request erasure of personal data when deemed necessary. Data controllers must comply with these requests within a set timeframe.

Enforcement is carried out primarily by the Swedish Data Protection Authority (Datainspektionen), which oversees compliance and conducts investigations of potential breaches. Non-compliance can result in significant fines, further emphasizing the gravity of the law.

Parallel to the datatillgänglighetslagen, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has been implemented in Sweden and throughout the European Economic Area. Both the Swedish law and the GDPR establish comprehensive frameworks for personal data protection, emphasizing consumer rights and promoting accountability among data controllers.

Major companies across industries have been required to adapt to the changed regulatory landscape, adding considerable complexity and demands to their personal data handling procedures.
