Datadestruction is the process of permanently removing data from storage media or rendering it unrecoverable to prevent unauthorized access. It encompasses both data sanitization, which preserves the media for reuse by removing data to an acceptable level of risk, and physical destruction, which irreversibly destroys the media.

Methods include logical destruction such as overwriting data with multiple passes, degaussing, and crypto-erasure (encrypt the data and delete the keys). Physical destruction includes wiping, shredding, crushing, pulverizing, incinerating, or dismantling devices so data cannot be reconstructed. The choice of method depends on the sensitivity of the information, the type of media, and regulatory obligations, as well as whether the media will be repurposed, recycled, or disposed of.

Standards and guidance commonly cited in datadestruction include NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 1, Guidelines for Media Sanitization, which defines levels of sanitization such as clear, purge, and destroy; DoD 5220.22-M (less commonly used now), DIN 66399, and various ISO/IEC standards on information security management. Cryptographic erasure is increasingly used in environments with robust encryption, whereby data is effectively destroyed by deleting encryption keys.

Applications include enterprises decommissioning servers and laptops, individuals disposing of devices, and cloud or data-center operators managing stored data. Proper datadestruction supports privacy and regulatory compliance (for example GDPR, HIPAA) and may require documentation, chain of custody, or audit trails. Environmental and safety concerns also influence disposal choices, favoring environmentally responsible recycling where possible.
