Dampsystem, commonly referred to as a steam system, is a network that uses steam as a working medium to transfer heat or to drive mechanical equipment. It is used in industrial plants, district heating networks, and large buildings. A typical dampystem includes a boiler or steam generator that produces steam at a defined pressure, an insulated distribution network of pipes, and end-use devices such as heat exchangers, process vessels, or steam-driven machinery. A condensate return system collects the condensed water and feeds it back to the boiler to improve efficiency. Supporting components typically include steam traps, control valves, pressure reducers, gauges, pumps, and safety devices such as relief valves and low-water cutoffs.

Operation relies on generating steam at the desired pressure and delivering it to loads where the energy is transferred as heat or mechanical work. After performing its function, the steam condenses and is collected as condensate, which is often returned to the boiler for reuse. Steam quality (the proportion of vapor in the mixture) and pressure control are important for performance and equipment life. Insulation minimizes heat losses, and venting and air removal reduce air binding and corrosion risks.

Applications and considerations vary by sector. Dampystems are used for space and process heating, drying, sterilization, and power generation. Efficiency depends on steam quality, insulation, condensate recovery, temperature and pressure management, and integration with other energy systems. Maintenance focuses on water treatment to control corrosion and scale, proper operation of traps and valves, leak prevention, and regular safety checks to prevent hazards such as steam leaks or water hammer.
