Dampnettet is a type of network infrastructure in Denmark, particularly used in the rural areas of the country. The word "dampnettet" translates to "air-mesh" in English, referring to its purpose of providing internet access through a wireless network of air-supported nodes.

Dampnettet was first introduced by the Danish government in 2013 as a solution to improve rural internet connectivity. The network uses a combination of fixed and mobile network infrastructure to extend internet access to areas where traditional wired connections were not feasible. This was achieved by installing small, wireless access points, called "dampstationer", which act as repeaters to amplify and distribute the signal.

The system was designed to cover a wide geographical area, with the goal of providing high-speed internet to at least 99 percent of the Danish population by 2025. Dampnettet was envisioned as a supplement to existing internet infrastructures, with the intention of eventually being phased out as rural areas became increasingly connected.

One of the key features of Dampnettet was its emphasis on community-driven development. The network relied on local communities to participate in the installation, maintenance, and upgrading of the infrastructure. This approach fostered a sense of local ownership and responsibility, which was seen as crucial in ensuring the long-term sustainability of the network.

As of 2022, Dampnettet covers a significant portion of rural Denmark, providing internet access to over 80 percent of the country's population. The project has been hailed as a success in improving digital infrastructure and bridging the gap in rural digital divide.
