damhert

Damhert, also known by its scientific name Dama dama, is a species of deer native to the Mediterranean region. It is a medium-sized deer, typically standing around 80-100 centimeters at the shoulder and weighing between 30-80 kilograms. Males, known as bucks, are generally larger than females, known as does.

One of the most distinctive features of the damhert is the palmate antlers of the bucks, which are broad and flattened, resembling an open hand. These antlers are shed and regrown annually. Damherts have a reddish-brown coat in the summer, which turns a darker, greyer brown in the winter. They also possess a characteristic white patch on their rump, which is outlined by a black stripe. This rump patch is particularly visible when the deer flees.

Damherts are social animals, often found in herds that can range in size from a few individuals to several dozen. Their diet consists primarily of grasses, leaves, shoots, and bark, and they are most active at dawn and dusk. They are herbivores and play a role in seed dispersal and vegetation management in their habitats.

The species is adaptable and can be found in a variety of environments, including woodlands, forests, meadows, and even open parklands. While their native range is the Mediterranean, damherts have been introduced to many other parts of Europe, as well as to Australia and New Zealand, often for sport or conservation purposes. Their ability to thrive in different climates has contributed to their widespread distribution outside of their original habitat.
