cürsü
A cürsü is a raised platform or pulpit found in mosques from which the imam delivers sermons, known as khutbah. It is typically situated to the right of the mihrab, the niche indicating the direction of Mecca. The design and construction of a cürsü can vary greatly depending on the architectural style and historical period of the mosque. Some are simple stone steps, while others are elaborate wooden structures adorned with intricate carvings and inlay work. Historically, the cürsü served as a visible and audible point of leadership for the community during Friday prayers and other important religious gatherings. Its elevated position ensures that the imam's voice can be heard by all congregants, especially in larger mosques. In some traditions, the cürsü may also be used for recitations of the Quran or other religious texts. The term itself originates from the Arabic word kursī, meaning seat or chair. While the function of delivering sermons remains constant, the visual prominence and decorative elements of a cürsü contribute significantly to the overall aesthetic and spiritual ambiance of a mosque.
