It also encompasses environmental toxicology and risk assessment, where cytotoxic endpoints inform regulatory decisions. International standards and guidelines, such as ISO 10993-5 for the cytotoxicity testing of medical devices and OECD test guidelines for chemicals, help ensure consistency and reliability.

Limitations and interpretation: in vitro cytotoxicity does not always predict in vivo outcomes due to complex biology, immune responses, and pharmacokinetics. Results depend on cell type, assay used, and exposure context, and are best interpreted as part of a weight-of-evidence approach to understand mechanisms and potential risks.
