Csontmetasztázisok refer to the spread of cancer cells from a primary tumor to the bones. This secondary cancer in the bone is not a new cancer, but rather cancerous cells from the original site. Bone metastases are common in many types of cancer, particularly breast, prostate, lung, kidney, and thyroid cancers. When cancer cells reach the bone, they can cause a variety of problems. These can include pain, which is often the first and most significant symptom, fractures due to weakened bone structure, spinal cord compression if the metastases press on the spinal cord, and hypercalcemia, a condition where there is too much calcium in the blood, leading to symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and confusion. The diagnosis of bone metastases is typically made through imaging tests such as X-rays, bone scans, CT scans, or MRI scans. Treatment aims to manage symptoms, improve quality of life, and slow the progression of the cancer. Options may include pain management with medication, radiation therapy to target specific bone lesions, bisphosphonates or denosumab to strengthen bones and reduce the risk of fractures, and systemic therapies like chemotherapy or hormone therapy to treat the underlying cancer.
