Crustalmagmake refers to magma that originates within or is significantly influenced by the Earth's crust. Unlike mantle-derived magmas, which form from the melting of the Earth's mantle, crustal magmas are generated from the melting of pre-existing crustal rocks. This melting can occur due to several processes, including increased heat flow from the mantle, decompression melting, or the addition of heat from ascending mantle melts.

The composition of crustal magmas is highly dependent on the type of crust that is melting. Continental crust, which is generally thicker and more silica-rich, produces magmas that are typically felsic in nature, meaning they have a high proportion of silica, aluminum, potassium, and sodium. These are often referred to as granitic or rhyolitic magmas. Oceanic crust, on the other hand, is thinner and more mafic, composed primarily of basalt. Melting of oceanic crust can produce more mafic magmas, similar to basalts, but can also be modified by assimilation of overlying sediments or interactions with water.

Crustal magmas are important in various geological settings. They are commonly found in areas of continental extension, such as rift zones, and in subduction zones where oceanic crust is being consumed and melting occurs in the overlying continental plate. The processes of fractional crystallization and assimilation play significant roles in modifying crustal magmas as they ascend and cool, leading to a wide range of igneous rock compositions.
