A crossmember is a structural member that runs transversely to the main axis of a frame or structure, connecting opposing elements to resist bending and carry loads. In vehicles, crossmembers form part of the chassis or subframe and provide mounting points for engines, transmissions, axles, and suspension components. They help maintain alignment and contribute to overall stiffness, affecting handling and crash performance. Front crossmembers support the radiator, engine cradle, and front suspension; rear crossmembers support the differential, rear suspension, and fuel tank in some layouts. In unibody designs, crossmembers may be integrated into the structure; in body-on-frame designs they are separate components bolted to frame rails. Materials commonly used include high-strength steel, aluminum alloys, and, less often, forged or cast sections; designs range from stamped or welded boxed sections to tubular or cast configurations.

In building construction, crossmembers are transverse beams used to tie together uprights or joists, helping distribute loads and improve rigidity in floors, roofs, or bridges. In other engineering fields, crossmembers serve similar functions as transverse connectors that brace frames and transfer loads.

Maintenance involves inspecting for corrosion, cracks, or deformation, which can impair strength and safety. Damaged crossmembers typically require repair or replacement, with attention to correct mounting geometry and fastener torque. The term can also refer to any transverse frame element used to stiffen or join a structure.
