Cronikus is a fictional character from the *Dungeons & Dragons* (D&D) tabletop role-playing game, first introduced in the *Dragon* magazine issue #151 (January 1989). Created by author and designer Ed Greenwood, Cronikus is a legendary figure in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting, known for his role in the creation of the world’s first dwarven city, Menzoberranzan, and his later involvement in the formation of the dwarven nation of the Dwarves of the Underdark.

Originally a surface-dwelling dwarf, Cronikus was exiled from his homeland for unknown reasons and sought refuge in the Underdark. There, he became a key figure in the development of Menzoberranzan, a sprawling subterranean city built by dwarves in the depths of the Underdark. His leadership and strategic mind earned him the title of "The Architect," as he designed much of the city’s infrastructure, including its iconic labyrinthine tunnels and defensive structures. Over time, Cronikus became a revered but enigmatic figure, often associated with the city’s mystical and political intrigues.

Cronikus is also linked to the creation of the dwarven nation of the Dwarves of the Underdark, a subgroup of dwarves who adapted to life beneath the earth. His influence extended beyond architecture, as he played a role in shaping their culture, traditions, and even their magical practices. Some legends suggest he possessed arcane knowledge, though his exact abilities remain debated among scholars.

In later D&D lore, Cronikus is sometimes portrayed as a semi-divine or legendary figure, with some sources describing him as a godlike entity or a powerful sorcerer-king.
