A countersignal is a signal generated with the aim of opposing or canceling another signal in order to reduce or eliminate its effect at a target location or measurement point. The concept relies on destructive interference or accurate subtraction, so that when the two signals are combined, the undesired component is attenuated while the desired information is preserved.

In practice, a countersignal is produced from a reference, model, or measurement of the interfering signal and is injected through an appropriate path with tuned gain, phase, and timing. Achieving effective cancellation requires knowledge of the target signal’s spectrum, amplitude, and phase, and may employ techniques such as adaptive filtering, phase-locked loops, or feedforward control to track changes in the signal environment.
