In many games, counterpicking occurs during the drafting phase, where teams or players take turns selecting options and banning choices. Popular in MOBAs (like League of Legends and Dota 2), fighting games (such as Super Smash Bros. and Street Fighter), and card games, counterpicks shape the later stages of play and can force opponents to adjust their game plan.

Counterpicks are categorized as hard counters, which provide a clear strategic advantage against a specific opponent pick, and soft counters, which offer a favorable situation but require effective execution to translate into victory. Players may also use situational or flex counters that complement their team composition or play style.

Selecting a counter involves evaluating knowledge of matchup data, the player's comfort with the chosen option, and how well the pick fits with team composition, synergy, and stage or item considerations.
