A counter is a device or mechanism that records the number of times a discrete event occurs or cycles through a finite sequence of states. Therefore, a counterlike system is one that tallies events, maintains a numeric tally, or advances through states in response to inputs, much as a traditional counter would.

In electronics and computing, counterlike components often refer to registers, timers, or software modules that increment on clock pulses or event triggers and that present a running total or progress metric.
