A countercoup is an organized effort to reverse a coup d'etat by the group advocating the restoration of the pre-coup government or leadership. It is distinguished from the initial coup by its aim to overturn the coup itself and reestablish the authority that existed before the disruption. Countercoups typically arise when factions within the state’s security forces, government institutions, political parties, or civilian groups contend that the coup lacks legitimacy or public backing.
