Such routes are typically perched on cliffs or hillsides or laid out along waterfront boulevards with parks, seating areas, and access to beaches. The term is widely used in coastal cities around the world, and several promenades are known by this name, including Beirut’s Corniche and Abu Dhabi’s Corniche.

Although related, the architectural cornice and the coastal corniche describe different elements. The cornice concerns the structure and ornament of a building, while a corniche denotes public space and transportation along a waterfront. The term remains common in place names and signage to highlight scenic, coastal settings.
