controlezones

Controlezones are designated volumes of airspace around airports where air traffic control (ATC) provides services and aircraft must obtain ATC clearance to operate. They are a form of controlled airspace designed to improve safety and efficiency during approach, departure, and surface operations near the aerodrome.

The boundaries of a controlezone are defined by lateral limits, often forming a circle or a more complex shape around the airport, and vertical limits that extend from the surface to a specified upper limit. The exact size and height vary by country and airport and are published in national aeronautical information publications and on aeronautical charts. The primary purpose is to manage traffic closely around the airfield where aircraft are in final approach, takeoff, and other critical phases of flight.

Entry and operation within a controlezone are subject to ATC rules. IFR (instrument flight rules) flights require ATC clearance to enter or operate within the zone. VFR (visual flight rules) flights typically must establish two-way radio communication with ATC and comply with ATC instructions; some zones may require a discrete transponder with altitude reporting. Flight plans and appropriate routing are often part of the procedures for entering or departing the zone.

Controlezones are part of the broader structure of controlled airspace. Outside a controlezone, airspace may be uncontrolled or subject to different classes with varying levels of ATC service. The term “controlezone” is commonly used in Dutch and other European contexts and corresponds to the English term “control zone” (CTR).
