Administrative contentieux concerns challenges to decisions or actions by public authorities, including regulatory rulings, public procurement, urban planning, taxation, and other acts of the state. Within public law, there are also specialized streams such as contentieux social (labor and employment disputes) and contentieux fiscal (tax disputes). Some jurisdictions discuss contentieux budgetaire or contentieux judiciaire as further distinctions within the field.

Procedurally, contentieux typically follows stages of filing a claim, service of process, exchange of evidence, hearings, and a court or tribunal ruling. Remedies commonly include appeals, and in some systems, cassation or referral to higher or constitutional courts when constitutional rights or fundamental principles are at stake.
