A contact lens prescription is a formal authorization issued by a licensed eye care professional that allows a patient to purchase contact lenses. It is separate from an eyeglasses prescription and is based on a contact lens fitting that assesses refractive error, corneal shape, tear film, and ocular health. A prescription may specify parameters such as sphere (SPH), cylinder (CYL), and axis (AX) for astigmatism, as well as the base curve (BC) and diameter (DIA) of the lenses. For multifocal lenses, an addition power (ADD) may be listed. The prescription can also indicate lens type (soft or rigid gas permeable), material, water content, and oxygen permeability (Dk). Wear schedules (daily or extended wear) and replacement schedules (daily disposables, biweekly, monthly) may be included, along with any brand or model restrictions.
