Constable is a title used for various law enforcement and peacekeeping officials in different countries. In its broad sense, a constable is an official charged with preserving public order and enforcing the law, often through duties such as serving warrants and process, maintaining the peace, providing court security, and assisting police or sheriffs. The role and authority of a constable vary widely by jurisdiction and historical period.

In the United Kingdom, constable commonly denotes the lowest rank in most police services, including England and Wales and Scotland. The term has historical roots in parish and local peacekeeping arrangements, and modernly a constable is a sworn police officer of entry rank. The rank is distinguished from higher ranks such as sergeant and inspector, with variances in insignia and duties among forces.

In the United States, the office of constable exists in several states with different powers. Some constables are elected county officers who may have general policing powers, serve warrants and process, and provide court security; others perform mainly civil-process duties or operate with limited authority. Texas is often cited as having elected county constables who patrol, serve writs, and assist in law enforcement, though powers vary by jurisdiction. In many states the office has been diminished or merged into sheriff or municipal police roles.

Historically, a constable could be the keeper of the peace in a town or fortress, such as a castle constable, and the term has occasionally survived in ceremonial or honorary roles in modern communities.
