conoscere

Conoscere is an Italian verb meaning to know in the sense of being acquainted with someone or something, or to meet someone for the first time. It is used with a direct object to express familiarity with people, places, or things, and can indicate the moment of personal acquaintance.

It derives from the Latin cognoscere, formed with con- and gnoscere, historically meaning to come to know or recognize. In Italian it has developed two related senses: familiarity or acquaintance, and the act of discovering or meeting someone.

Conoscere is often contrasted with sapere, which expresses factual knowledge or know-how. Use conoscere for familiarity or to indicate meeting someone: conosco Maria; abbiamo conosciuto la città l’estate scorsa. Use sapere for facts or information: so dove si trova la stazione; non so se è aperto.

Key verb forms (present indicative): io conosco, tu conosci, lui conosce, noi conosciamo, voi conoscete, loro conoscono.
