ColormDifference is a quantitative measure of the visual difference between two colors. It is used to assess how closely a produced color matches a target color in fields such as design, manufacturing, printing, and digital media. The concept relies on color science, translating colors into perceptually meaningful color spaces like CIELAB (Lab) or CIELUV, where differences correspond more closely to human vision. To compute a color difference, the color coordinates of the two colors are compared to produce a single scalar value.

The most common metric is Delta E, denoted ΔE. The initial form, ΔEab, is the Euclidean distance between colors in CIELAB space: sqrt((ΔL)^2 + (Δa)^2 + (Δb)^2). Several refinements exist to better align with perceived differences, including ΔE94, ΔE2000, and, in some contexts, CMC l:c. Other variants use different color spaces such as CIELUV or CAM02-UCS. Each metric has its own strengths and is preferred in different industries and workflows.

Applications include color matching in product development, quality control in printing and textiles, and color management in pipelines that require objective color comparisons. Limitations include dependence on viewing conditions (illumination and observer), device characteristics, and the phenomenon of metamers—colors that appear identical under one light source but differ under another. No single metric perfectly captures human perception across all colors; the choice of metric depends on the specific application and acceptable tolerances.

Interpreting ΔE values: lower numbers indicate closer matches, with small values typically corresponding to near-perfect matches under controlled viewing conditions; larger values indicate greater perceived differences. Thresholds for acceptability vary by industry and use case.
