Coloraltering refers to the phenomenon by which an object's color changes in response to external stimuli. It encompasses natural biological coloration, chemical indicators, and engineered materials that alter appearance through reversible or irreversible color transitions. The term covers both pigment-based changes and structural changes in how light interacts with a substance.

In materials science, coloraltering is achieved through pigment-based changes, structural coloration, or combinations of both. Pigment-based changes can result from shifts in pigment state, concentration, or distribution, producing different hues. Structural coloration changes arise from microstructural modifications that affect light reflection and interference, often creating iridescence or angle-dependent color. Common stimulus types include temperature (thermochromism), light (photochromism), pH changes (acid–base indicators), and electrical or mechanical triggers (electrochromism, mechanochromism).

In biology, coloraltering is used for camouflage, signaling, and temperature regulation. Many species change color rapidly through specialized cells and structures. Cephalopods such as octopuses and cuttlefish deploy chromatophores, iridophores, and other tissues to alter appearance, while some reptiles and fish adjust pigment distribution in their skin.

Applications of coloraltering materials include sensors, indicators, and display technologies. Thermochromic and photochromic materials are used in mood-responsive items and eyewear, whereas electrochromic devices enable smart windows and low-power displays. Colorimetry and standardized color spaces (such as CIE L*a*b*) are used to quantify and compare color changes, typically with spectrophotometers or colorimeters. Considerations in development emphasize reversibility, durability, specificity to stimuli, and environmental safety.
