Coccygeala refers to structures associated with the coccyx, the small terminal bone of the vertebral column. In anatomy, coccygeal concepts describe the region, elements, and features related to the tailbone.

Anatomy and variation: The coccyx typically consists of three to five coccygeal vertebrae that are fused in adulthood. It articulates with the sacrum at the sacrococcygeal joint. The vertebrae are small, with reduced bodies and fused elements, and it serves as an attachment point for several muscles and ligaments. The number of fused segments can vary among individuals.

Function: The coccygeal region provides attachments for muscles of the pelvic floor, including the coccygeus and portions of the levator ani, as well as ligaments and connective tissue. It acts as a support and stabilizing point for the pelvis, and its position can influence seating and defecation mechanics by serving as a posterior anchor for soft tissue structures.

Clinical relevance: Pain in the coccygeal region, known as coccydynia, can result from trauma, prolonged sitting, childbirth, or degenerative changes. Diagnosis is usually clinical, with imaging used in complex cases. Management is typically conservative, featuring cushions, activity modification, anti-inflammatory medications, and physical therapy; surgery (coccygectomy) is uncommon and reserved for persistent refractory cases.

Etymology: The term coccygeal comes from Latin coccyx, which in turn derives from Greek kokkyx, meaning “cuckoo’s beak,” a reference to the bone’s shape.
