CNWAN stands for Cloud-Native Wide Area Network, a term used to describe a cloud-native approach to wide area networking that blends software-defined WAN concepts with cloud-native technologies. It aims to provide scalable, programmable connectivity between branch offices, data centers, and public cloud resources through containerized network functions, microservices, and automated management.

In CNWAN, the control plane is typically centralized in a cloud environment, while the data plane is realized by virtualized network functions running on commodity hardware or cloud infrastructure. Network services such as routing, firewall, VPN, WAN optimization, and policy enforcement are deployed as microservices or cloud-native network functions, often orchestrated with Kubernetes. Edge devices or virtual routers at customer sites connect to the cloud-native fabric and apply policies using security models that emphasize zero-trust principles.

CNWAN supports multi-cloud connectivity, rapid deployment, and consistent policy across sites. It enables infrastructure as code, telemetry, and service-m mesh-like capabilities to manage networking as a software discipline. Deployment can occur on public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid environments, facilitating seamless access to SaaS and IaaS resources as networks expand.

Challenges in CNWAN adoption include the need for maturity in cloud-native tooling, security complexity, performance considerations, and interoperability across vendors. Operational skills and robust observability are important to manage distributed, containerized network functions. While CNWAN reflects a broader move toward software-defined networking, not all vendors use the same terminology or provide identical implementations, and the landscape continues to evolve with cloud-native networking practices.
