Circumvallate papillae are a type of taste receptor structure located on the posterior part of the human tongue. Each circumvallate papilla is large, dome‑shaped, and surrounded by a slight depression forming a narrow trench. There are typically 10 to 12 pairs distributed in a vomer‑shaped arrangement along the midline of the dorsal surface of the tongue. They are the largest papillae and often appear as rounded ridges when the tongue is examined with a tongue depressor.
