Circumplanetary refers to things that occur around a planet, particularly in astronomical contexts. The term is used to describe structures, environments, or dynamics in the gravitational zone of a planet, as distinct from phenomena that surround a star or star system.

Circumplanetary disks are a key concept in planet formation. When a planet forms within a protoplanetary disk, it can open a gap and become surrounded by a smaller disk composed of gas and dust. This circumplanetary disk feeds the growing planet and provides material that can form moons. The disk lies within the planet’s Hill sphere and typically spans a finite region of a few to several tens of planetary radii. Accretion onto the planet and the accretion of material into regular satellites are both possible outcomes of this environment.

Circumplanetary orbits describe how moons and other material move around a planet. Stable satellite orbits generally reside well inside the planet’s Hill sphere, with dynamics influenced by the planet’s gravity, the star’s gravity, and perturbations from the surrounding disk. The architecture of satellite systems reflects the interaction between accretion, migration, and resonant dynamics within the circumplanetary region.

Observations and modeling continue to refine understanding of circumplanetary structures. Direct imaging and high-resolution spectroscopy have provided constraints on the presence and properties of circumplanetary disks around forming planets in systems such as PDS 70. Simulations of disk–planet interactions help explain how moons form and how planets grow within their circumplanetary environments.

Circumplanetary concept aids explanations of satellite formation, planet growth, and the dynamics of planetary systems. It contrasts with circumstellar phenomena and remains a focus of both observational and theoretical studies.
