chugakko
Chugakko is the Japanese term for junior high school. It is the second stage of compulsory education in Japan, following elementary school (shogakko) and preceding high school (koko). Students typically attend chugakko from the age of 12 to 15. The curriculum usually includes core subjects such as Japanese language, mathematics, science, social studies, and English, along with physical education and arts. A strong emphasis is placed on academic achievement and preparation for entrance examinations for high school. School uniforms are common, and extracurricular activities, known as bukatsu, play an important role in student life, offering opportunities for sports, cultural pursuits, and club activities. Upon graduation from chugakko, students may proceed to high school, which is not compulsory. The educational system is designed to provide a foundational academic and social experience for adolescents.
