Chatrooms emerged from early online communication systems, with Internet Relay Chat (IRC) introduced in 1988 as one of the first widely used chat protocols. In the 1990s, web-based chat rooms hosted by portals, forums, and later social platforms popularized public and private conversations. Over time, features such as persistent chat logs, private messaging, and moderation tools were added.

Typical chatrooms support multiple concurrent conversations, topic-based channels, and searchability. Rooms may be public or private, moderated or unmoderated, and often require registration. Users can join, read messages, post new messages, and use mentions or emoji. Moderation tools include bans, timeouts, topic restrictions, and message filtering. Some environments support bots, file sharing, and integrations with other services.

Moderation aims to maintain civility and safety, addressing harassment, hate speech, and privacy concerns. Logging and archival policies vary; users should be aware of record-keeping and consent when participating from shared devices or networks. Platform terms of service and community guidelines guide acceptable behavior.

While the rise of social networks, instant messaging apps, and collaborative platforms has reduced reliance on standalone chatrooms, they remain active in certain communities and specialized environments such as open-source projects, gaming communities, and classrooms. Notable historical examples include IRC, while modern equivalents may appear in chat features on larger platforms or standalone services.
