Charcoalification is the transformation of organic matter into charcoal through pyrolysis under limited or restricted oxygen. The term is used in archaeology, geology, and environmental science to describe both natural charcoal formation during fires and the industrial production of charcoal.

In natural settings, incomplete combustion of vegetation during wildfires or slow pyrolysis in subsurface conditions can produce charcoal that becomes dispersed and preserved in soils and sediment layers. These charcoal fragments, including microcharcoal, serve as indicators of past fire regimes and vegetation history in paleoenvironmental studies.

In industrial contexts, charcoalification refers to controlled pyrolysis where organic material is heated in the absence or near absence of oxygen. Temperatures commonly range from about 300°C to 600°C. Volatiles are driven off, moisture is removed, and the remaining material develops a carbon-rich, highly porous structure. The resulting charcoal is chemically stable and resistant to decomposition, properties that underpin its use as a fuel, a soil amendment, and a component in carbon sequestration strategies.

Applications and implications include: providing energy via charcoal production, improving soil fertility and water retention when used as biochar, and contributing to long-term carbon storage in terrestrial ecosystems. Charcoal as a material is porous, with a large surface area that can adsorb nutrients and contaminants, influencing soil chemistry and environmental remediation.

Charcoalification is related to, but distinct from, carbonization and biochar production. In some contexts, charcoal and biochar are differentiated by purpose (fuel versus soil amendment) and production conditions, though both arise from the same fundamental process of thermal decomposition in low-oxygen environments.
