This compound is a significant contributor to the toxicity of the plant. Cerberinogen belongs to the group of cardiac glycosides, which are known for their effects on the heart muscle.

Upon ingestion, cerberinogen is absorbed into the bloodstream and exerts its toxic effects by inhibiting the sodium-potassium pump (Na+/K+-ATPase) in cardiac cells. This inhibition leads to an increase in intracellular sodium and calcium concentrations, resulting in altered heart muscle contractility and rhythm. Symptoms of cerberinogen poisoning can include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, bradycardia (slow heart rate), heart block, and potentially fatal arrhythmias. The severity of poisoning depends on the amount ingested and individual susceptibility. Due to its potent toxicity, *Cerbera odollam* seeds containing cerberinogen have been historically used in suicides and homicides, although accidental poisonings also occur, particularly in regions where the tree is indigenous. There is no specific antidote for cerberinogen poisoning; treatment is primarily supportive and focuses on managing cardiac symptoms and preventing further absorption of the toxin.
